Investing in the Future: Introducing Kairos’ NextGen Changemaker Fellow, Niko Rai
At Kairos Impact Strategies, we believe lasting community change requires investing in the next generation of leaders, advocates, and changemakers. Through our NextGen Changemaker Fellowship, we are creating opportunities for emerging professionals to gain hands-on experience, build practical skills, and contribute to meaningful work that strengthens communities and advances social impact.
This summer, we are thrilled to welcome Niko Rai as our inaugural NextGen Changemaker Fellow! Niko will support research, communications, and engagement efforts for partners addressing some of our communities' most pressing challenges, including education equity, human trafficking, housing instability, and homelessness. Throughout the fellowship, Niko will work alongside our team to help organizations tell stronger stories, mobilize people to action, and drive positive change.
We recently sat down with Niko to learn more about their background, the social causes they are passionate about, and what they hope to gain from this fellowship experience. Read on to get to know our first-ever NextGen Changemaker Fellow.
Niko, tell us a little about yourself. Where are you from, what are you studying, and what drew you to your field of interest?
I was raised in Angwin, CA, a small college town in Napa County. I'm heading into my last year in undergrad studying Natural History and Archaeology. I find it fascinating how much information is held in a single fragment of pottery or bone, how you can piece together history through objects. However, the thing that drew me to archaeology was its capacity for good. Modern archaeologists are working on righting the historical injustices of their discipline by forming closer relationships with the people they study and prioritizing cultural sovereignty over data collection; I aim to do the same.
What are some passions, hobbies, or causes that are important to you outside of school and work?
Outside of school, I like to draw, paint, sew, cook — really anything creative. My main instrument is classical guitar. I've been taking lessons for seven years and I play in a classical guitar ensemble at my university. Causes I have been involved in recently include student voter outreach and providing access to gender-affirming items.
Who has been one of the biggest influences in your life, and why?
My old neighbor from Angwin. He was an art professor who had a vast rock and mineral collection. He gave me free art lessons, and many cool rocks and fossils. I credit him with sparking my interest in archaeology and the earth sciences. Thank you, Uncle Tom!
What skills are you hoping to develop during your time with Kairos?
I hope to learn about strategic communications and community engagement, and to strengthen my technical writing skills.
What are your career aspirations, and how does this fellowship fit into your long-term goals?
I want to build a career in cultural resource management. This fellowship will help me put my principles into practice. I will learn how to be a good work partner and advocate for underrepresented communities.
Ok, now for some rapid-fire questions, here we go:
- Coffee or tea? — Any kind of green tea
- Favorite book, podcast, or creator right now? — I'm currently rereading Piranesi by Susanna Clarke. Highly recommend for any fantasy enjoyers!

- What's your go-to comfort food? — Mango sticky rice
- What's a small thing that always makes your day better? — Sitting in the sun with my dog
Thank you, Niko. We are so excited for you to join our team this summer!
